After talking with a partner and thinking about the question, what do you think are some of the ways a society can reduce prejudice? Which way or ways do you feel is going to be most effective? Why?

I think there are many kinds of prejudice in a society, not just between different cultures. As prejudice is one of the most persistent things in the world, there’s not much effective we can do to reduce prejudice.

But maybe there are some things help reduce prejudice. First, people get their most opinions from school, at least in China. The teachers tell students their opinions or general opinions about something. Well, sometimes those opinions are prejudice. Like we were told Japanese are all evil because of things they did during the war. In fact, there still are some good qualities about Japanese. Of course we should not forget that history, still people need to know more truth about Japanese. So teachers are playing an important role of reducing prejudice. People will believe what teachers say especially when they are young.

Secondly, the media is the other way to spread prejudice. The same example about Japanese, we were told by the news that Japan is refused to admit the history about the war with China and they also made up unreal stories about that history in their textbooks for students. But the truth is those textbooks with wrong stories are used less than 1%. Most Japanese were told the real stories about that war. So if the media can tell us more truth or don’t ignore the true information, we can sort of reduce our prejudice.

Basically, my opinion is we have prejudice because of lack of knowledge. We got some prejudice because we were not told the truth. If a society really wants to reduce prejudice, start with telling the truth.

These immigrants were from Europe and the first place they got in the United States was New York. The journey across the Atlantic was so horrible. It took months on the sea. There were more people on the ship than the ship could carry. The ships were crowded. Most immigrants were poor people. They cannot afford a good position so they had to stay together in such a small place. There was not enough food, water or even fresh air for them. Everyday, some people dead. But all these situations cannot stop people. The reason why those people took this trip was they want to have a better life in this new land. They thought there were more opportunities in this new land. They came with hope and dream.

Chart on Page 43

The data showed in this chart tells us about the population age distribution of the United States. Basically it talks about the problem of an aging population. The population of teenages and people from 18 to 64 is decreasing in the past 50 years. But the population of people older than 65 is increasing. And this situation will continue. The most important reason is people in the United States got better health care especially old people. This situation not only existed in the United States, but also in other developed countries.

The situation showed in the chart tells us health care has a big relationship with money. Poorer countries do have worse live environment, less doctors, worse health equipment and people in these countries spend less money on health care.

Wealthier countries not just individual, but also the government spends a lot on health care. But poorer countries’ government has less spend on construction of Public Health. People of these countries spend less on their personal health care as well.

According to the article “AIDS-not Someone Else’s Problem” from “Making Connections”, AIDS was considered as one of the most worldwide problem. AIDS began to appear in the late 1970s in the United States and finally got a name in 1982. Most patients were young, white homosexual men and they became weaker and weaker and died. For three reasons, the United States didn’t respond too much to AIDS. At the same time, scientists tried to find some information about AIDS. They found out the cause of it and how it transferred. After 1984, AIDS became a global problem. Other groups of people like teenagers, women and so on got AIDS. It also can be found around the whole world. So every country put a lot of money to do the research of finding the cure to AIDS. But it didn’t have any effective advance. The drugs so far can’t cure AIDS. There are some tips from scientists that can help prevent getting AIDS but it still didn’t work so well.

Health care systerm between wealthier world and poorer world are very different. Because of the differences in money, basic medical equipments and live envirnment, different world focus on different thing. Wealthier countries cares more about the diseases that are complicated, difficulty but a small group would get. Instead, poorer countries cares more about the diseases that common, everyone would possible get and cheap to pay.

1 How do people pay for their health care?

For people who got a job in company or government, their health care can be paid by the company or the government. For some very poor people, the government would pay their health care.

2 What are the strengths and weaknesses of the health care system?

It helps people with their health and avoid some bad disease.

It also a complicated system for some people espeically some old people.

The article “Gene Therapy” introduced some basic information about gene therapy. The article includes the definition of gene therapy, how it works, condition of gene therapy research, problems, recent developments about the research, and the consideration of ethics. Basically, gene therapy is about curing some disease by dealing with the gene. For example, the most usual way is to put a normal gene to replace a nonfunctional gene. That is how gene therapy works. Although gene therapy has some good progress, there are a lot of problems which hinder gene therapy from being the most effective way to cure disease.

The article mentioned some hot questions that people always talk about. These questions are from ethics. Though the gene therapy begins to become a new way to save people’s life, some people started to think if this is appropriate. One of the hot questions is “Are disabilities diseases? Do they need to be cured or prevented?”

In my opinion, gene therapy just looks like everything else. It has advantages and disadvantages. Some doctors believe that if gene therapy can be used in clinical medicine, they can know what disease a person could get during his life. And they can cure them with gene therapy. People would not get aby disease because doctors can sure them before we got them. Also, gene therapy could be used for losing weight or something else. Some people would consider about genetic privacy, genetic weapon and so on. I guess those are the reasons why gene therapy couldn’t be used widely. Anyway, gene therapy is a good way to cure disease.
